Patients overexposed to the risk of infection

Patients overexposed to the risk of infection

Units such as haematology, oncology, operating rooms, transplant units, protected sectors or burns units have a risk class of 3 or 4 in accordance with standard NF S90-351.

The risk of contamination can be significant, even life-threatening for patients with aplasia or profound immunosuppression. Filamentous fungi such as Aspergillus fumigatus can result in the development of invasive aspergillosis associated with a high mortality rate of up to 92%.

In these units, it is recommended to ensure at least ISO 7 air quality.

Air handling via a mobile unit recommended by scientists

A number of learned societies recommend the use of air handling units in at-risk units:

  • In haematology protected sectors: they are recommended by the EBMT (European Blood & Marrow Transplantation, JACIE 2015) and the ASBMT (American Society of Blood & Marrow Transplantation 2009) to protect patients with aplasia or immunosuppression.
  • In ICU: according to the French Society of Anaesthesia and Resuscitation (SFAR), patients at high risk of aspergillosis are protected in positive pressure rooms (15 Pa) with air changed 20 times an hour and effective HEPA filtration. Patients at risk of airborne contamination must be isolated in negative pressure rooms (-2.5 Pa) where the air is changed 12 times an hour.
  • In operating rooms: it is now recognised that a turbulent flow created by properly maintained equipment helps achieve sufficient air quality for most surgical procedures (opinion of the French Hospital Hygiene Society and the French Academy of Surgery, 2018).

Choose the air handling solution suited to your risk level

Choose the air handling solution suited to your risk level

We provide a number of biohazard disinfectant solutions to reinforce your centralised facilities or create controlled environment areas based on standard rooms:

  • In protected sectors:
    • Create a protected space around your immunocompromised patients with our IMMUNAIR® tents combined with our PLASMAIR® mobile air handling units, to achieve ISO 5 air quality.
    • Turn a standard room into a sterile room for immunocompromised patients, including an access airlock, by combining our BIOCAIR® positive pressure modular solution with our PLASMAIR® mobile air decontamination units, to achieve ISO 5 air quality.
  • In infectious disease units and ICU: turn a standard room into an isolation room with access airlock by combining our BIOCAIR® negative pressure modular solution with our PLASMAIR® mobile air decontamination units.
  • In standard rooms: for patients with stronger immune defences, opt for PLASMAIR® mobile units to be placed directly in standard rooms to achieve ISO 7 air quality. In addition, our H14 HEPA mobile filtration units can be installed in corridors to ensure initial contamination abatement and protect the PLASMAIR® units installed in the rooms.

Disinfect your surfaces to enhance patient protection

In protected sectors as well as infectious disease or resuscitation units, it is important to combine Airborne Surface Disinfection with manual biocleaning to limit the risk of contamination by residual germs, found on hard-to-reach surfaces.

For the rapid disinfection of your surfaces, perform an ASD with our RHEA units featuring our HPVPA technology
